Meet Susan FrankenbergA Professional Educator, Author, Parent and Read Aloud Advocate.
Here I am with my granddaughters following a visit to the bookstore.
Hello, my name is Susan Frankenberg and I wear many hats. These hats include elementary school teacher, author, Read Aloud advocate, parent, grandparent, and creator of the Read Aloud Magic website and newsletter. I've harbored a love of reading, a love of children, a love of teaching, and a love of Read Aloud for all of my adult life. Now, I've taken this passion one step further by offering information and support to any parent who wants to provide the benefits of Read Aloud to their children. My passion, my mission, my goal, is to help you, and other parents like you, realize the wonderful benefits of "Read Aloud Magic." This website is helping me achieve that goal. Learn more about Susan Frankenberg and her Professional Background. My Read Aloud PerspectiveI have absolutely loved reading to children for as long as I can remember. I credit my parents with igniting the love of listening to books by reading to me often. I have four Winnie the Pooh books, worn and faded, that are my treasures, sitting on my home shelves, reminding me of a time of snuggling up, listening, and of being the one chosen to spend time with. As a young parent, I also read to my own children on a consistent basis. As a result, I've seen the outcome of Read Aloud in their lives. In addition, I will forever carry within me the memories of all those times we cuddled up and read together. My love of Read Aloud was ignited into a true passion many years ago when I attended a small gathering of parents to hear a speaker at the Agawam, Massachusetts Public Library on a snowy, wintry evening. That evening, a gentleman by the name of Jim Trelease spoke what I knew to be true about the value of reading to children. Ever since that evening I've had the utmost respect for Jim Trelease. In fact, I've kept in contact with him throughout the years, and attended many of his highly informative and motivating seminars. As a seasoned adult, I decided that my professional calling was to become a teacher. I went back to school, earned my teaching degree, and began my teaching career at the middle school level. Each day I started class with a 10-minute Read Aloud. Not only did I find it settled the classroom down immediately, it engaged the students a way I never imagined. Those middle school students brought me many unexpected Read Aloud moments that I'll never forget. However, I was particularly honored when a student came up and took over the Read Aloud session one day when I found my throat tightening with emotion from the story we'd been reading. Year after year, these students and I spent time together in places and circumstances that brought us closer and helped us grow, all through a series of remarkable books and 10-minute daily Read Alouds. Those first years of teaching middle school convinced me beyond a doubt that Read Aloud time supported student success. It really shouted at me! I've now been an educator for almost 20 years. I've taught students in various regions of the country, in various school systems, across various socio-economic backgrounds, and across multiple grade-levels. The sum total of this experience has shown me an immense correlation between home Read Aloud and academic success. Every year that I teach I continue to see the academic advantages of students that were, and continue to be, read aloud to at home. I cannot recall a single child who has been read to, at home, on a consistent basis, who does poorly in school. These students typically shine at school, right from the very first day. I presently teach 4th grade atop Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Step into my classroom and perhaps you'll be there in time to see the Read Aloud book get picked up from my desk and hear, "Shhhhh, she's going to read!" Read Aloud is truly Magic. With all my heart I know this to be true. I live it daily as an elementary educator. I recently received a letter from a highly respected Read Aloud advocate encouraging me "to not keep my unique and powerful Read Aloud perspective to myself." This further fueled my enthusiasm to actively pursue my Read Aloud Magic book, website and newsletter. Now, I want to bring other families to this place these successful students are, and where I am. Thus, my desire to spread the Read Aloud message. My hope is to have a positive impact on on as many families as possible around the country, and perhaps even around the world. And, whatever the number, I know it will be an impact that lasts a lifetime! Learn more about Susan Frankenberg and her Professional Background. I consider it a privilege to be able to work with parents striving to build a better life for their children through Read Aloud. I sincerely hope that you will decide to become one of those families.
